For the first time in the history of Digital Cinema, Movie-on-Demand has been introduced in a cinema network, designed, developed and implemented by Real Image Media Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Chennai, India as the partner to Bartholomeu Digital Cinema, who conceived the basic framework for this network. Represented by its marketing agents, Gigalink, in Portugal, Real Image won this prestigious contract for the Qube platform against worldwide competition from all major digital cinema server manufacturers on the strength of its end-to-end capability to deliver a Digital Cinema Solution, as opposed to just a box solution.

Entirely developed on its proprietary Qube Technology Platform, this path-breaking capability is now available on the RedeCine Network currently consisting of 5 cinema theatres with another 15 to be added; located in Portugal and operated by the Institute of Cinema and Multimedia (ICAM), under the Ministry of Culture. With the networked Qube Digital Cinema System, these theatres can now use a web-based interface to choose content for download from the central server for the requisite period - the entire digital rights management including issuance of licences and retrieval of play logs is automatically done by the system. The moment a download has been authorised, the content download into the Qube Server in the theatre commences via a dedicated data link. The cinemas can also choose to play the movies with sub-titles (where available) in the language of their choice.

The entire network is controlled through QubeCentral which is a web-based digital cinema back-end operations management and reporting system that provides movie-on-demand download scheduling and transparently and securely transmits access control keys. The system can also be used to schedule commercials and provides password-protected online access to as-run logs and the health status of units in the field.

The Ministry of Culture, Portugal, expects to achieve the following goals with the recently inaugurated RedeCine Network:

  • Make it easier to distribute and promote independent Portuguese and European cinema by lowering distribution costs
  • Promote investment in cinema theatres in the interior of the country, in regions that are currently underdeveloped culturally
  • Create a distribution platform for universities as well as young and upcoming independent producers and directors
  • Promote cultural exchange with other countries
  • Promote and develop digital production

Besides this network which intends to expand in Portugal to about 50 screens by the end of the Calendar Year and to an eventual size of about a hundred screens in Portugal, the Portuguese government sees the digital platform of RedeCine as a way to connect the Portuguese institutes around the world and in this way being able to easily distribute and promote Portuguese culture worldwide, namely through Camoes Institute.

The existing work to promote the exchange of cultural initiatives among Portuguese speaking countries will also gain from RedeCine as the government plans to expand the network to the PALOP countries in 2006.

Real Image Media Technologies, India, the parent company of Qube Cinema Inc., is in... such a facility.
