QubeCast
There are two key areas in which Digital Fountain's technology provides significant benefits for a digital cinema network. High latency networks that use conventional file transfer technologies are severely limited in the rate of transfer that can be achieved with a higher bandwidth and Digital Fountain's technology helps make the latency of the network a non-issue. The second is the nature of Digital Fountain's error correction which makes it necessary for clients to only receive a volume of data equal to 105% of the original size in order to reconstruct the file. Since packets may also be received in any order, specific re-transmissions are no longer necessary and thus, the transmission time for a large theatre network at worst only grows linearly when compared with other error correction schemes that rely on specific packets being re-sent. The QubeCast server is implemented as a Windows service with a web-based UI that allows transmissions to be setup and initiated from anywhere in the world over a secure connection. The QubeCast server uses an MS SQL database for all data storage While QubeCast can work with a one-way link, any return channel that supports http allows clients to report their detailed status. Clients need to register with the QubeCast server and are thereafter available to be selected as recipients of a specific transmission. The overall status of a transmission is available to be viewed over the web UI and this can be drilled down to see the status of each individual client and further down to each file on each client. The QubeCast server has an API that allows external applications such as QubeCentral to setup transmissions and to specify the clients that are to receive each transmission. The QubeCast client is also implemented as a Windows service and has no UI. A local configuration file can specify a temporary location to which packages are to be downloaded if necessary. Once a complete package is received by the QubeCast client, the software can initiate the server's ingest process. It must be pointed out that QubeCast does not lay a high emphasis on content security as it is intended to be used over either a VPN channel or a VSAT link with a reasonably secure path. The product is intended for the digital cinema market where all cinema content is by itself encrypted as per the DCI Specification with 128-bit AES. The QubeCast system has been tested and operates reliably at speeds upto 100 Mbits/sec. The system is currently in deployment in Real Image's 200-screen digital cinema network across India using the Hughes VSAT network. |
