Can I create a DCP from Image Sequences?

QubeMaster Xpress does not currently have the facility to make a DCP from a numbered sequence of images – it can however accept an assortment of multiple static slides.

Do sources with the 1998x1080 aspect cause QubeMaster Xpress to crash

Yes, indeed, in QubeMaster Xpress version 2.0, the resolution of 1998x1080 does cause problems. - there is a bug in QMXpress 2 that causes it to crash when files with the 1998x1080 aspect are chosen as the source.

The work-around is to convert these sources to 2000x1080 if possible (QubeMaster Xpress will squeeze it back to 1998x1080) or retain it at 1920x1080.

This bug has been fixed in version 2.5.

Can QubeMaster Xpress 2 work with different codecs and file formats?

QubeMaster Xpress can work with still images in the TIFF, TGA, JPG, BMP and PICT formats. It can also work with avi and QuickTime (mov) video files provided the required codecs are installed on the system. A quick way to check if the codec is installed is to play the file through Windows Media Player (for avi files) and QuickTime player (for mov files). Generally, if files playback on either of these two standard media players, QubeMaster Xpress 2 should also be able to open these files.

If not, the required codecs will need to be installed in order for QMX to be able to open the files.

Additionally, it should be noted that QubeMaster Xpress expects video files to have a CONSTANT FRAME RATE, at any one of the industry-standard frame-rates of 24, 25, 30 (29.97) or 23.98. Variable frame-rate files will cause an out-of-sync DCP.

Why does the “DCP creation complete” pop-up window not appear even though the time remaining in the status bar is “00:00”

There are two main stages in the QMX DCP creation process - the encoding stage and the packaging stage. The status bar only indicates the progress of the encoding stage. The packaging stage also takes a bit of time and is dependent on the length of the DCP (and therefore the size of the mxf files), the speed of the hard-drives, CPU configuration and amount of RAM.

Depending on the length of the DCP (and the size of the mxf files) the packaging stage could take up to 5 or 10 minutes.

Format of DCP distribution Drives

According to the current specifications (available at http://isdcf.com/papers/ISDCF-Doc3-Disk-Drive-Recommendations-20120906V2... (link is external))

The distribution media partition shall be formatted in either the EXT2 or the EXT3 format. When the file system is formatted, the inode size shall be set to128 bytes

Is my source in Rec.709 or DCI XYZ color space?

The color space of commonly used digital image files is RGB (Rec.709). Therefore, this is the default selection in QMX. If however, the source's color space has been converted to the Digital Cinema XYZ, during the post-production process and prior to bringing the files to QMX, then the selection must be set to DCI XYZ in QubeMaster Xpress.

Are my files Interlaced or progressive?

The interlaced scanning methods are relevant only for moving picture files – avi, QuickTime (mov), wmv, mpg etc., and are normally relevant only to sources that were captured at TV frame-rates of 25i (PAL) and 29.97i (NTSC). Film frame-rate of 24p and 23.98p do not normally employ interlaced scanning. Your choice of scanning method in QMX must depend on the method in which the source was captured on camera and/or created in post-production. Normally video files from television cameras and digital cameras, captured for television broadcast, will be shot as interlaced. The Interlaced scanning method saves each frame of the image as two separate halves known as “fields”. Each field contains only the ODD lines or EVEN lines of an image and both fields are separated by a temporal distance of 1/50th of a second. Combining these two fields does not normally produce a very good quality image – but must be done in order to ensure that a DCP is DCI compliant.

What Frame-rates does QMX support

QubeMaster Xpress expects video files to have a CONSTANT FRAME RATE, at any one of the industry-standard frame-rates of 24, 25, 30 (29.97) or 23.98. Variable frame-rate files will cause an out-of-sync DCP.

The resultant DCP frame-rate will depend on the DCP format you have chosen – either INTEROP or SMPTE

DCI requirements for JPEG2000 Inter-op DCPs requires that 2D DCPs must have a frame-rate of 24fps only. No other frame-rate was/is supported. With the new SMPTE specification, however, additional frame-rates are supported – including 25fps, 60fps etc. So, if you choose the output DCP format as JPEG2000 Inter-op, QMX will, by default, convert the source frame-rate to 24fps if it is not so. For 25fps, QMX employs the 4% slow-down method – thereby increasing the duration of the resultant DCP by 4% as well.

What data rate should I select?

In the “Advanced” setting you have the option to specify the data rate of the DCP (for the image file). DCI specifies that the maximum data rate is 250Mbits, but there is no minimum data rate specification. While deciding on a data rate, just keep in mind the basic tenet that high data rates result in very good quality images but also result in larger file sizes and vice versa. Since data rate specifications affect the quality of an image and the resultant file size of a DCP, the choice should be made based on a good balance of quality and file size.

Which 3D formats does QMX support?

DCI compliant 3D DCP are always “Frame Sequential”. This means that there is only one MXF file, and this MXF file will have alternating frames for the left and right eye stream. This also means that the MXF file will be at 48fps (or 24fps per eye).

The source file however can be in any of the three following formats:

  • Sequential: Frame sequential refers to the format in which alternate frames in the movie file are left and right eye respectively. This presupposes the frame-rate of 48fps, (24fps for each eye). If the frame-rate is not true 48fps, the "sequential" option will not be available.
  • Side-by-Side: Side-by-side is the 3D format in which both left and right eye images are included as two vertical halves of a single frame. This is a common format used by NLE applications and 3D TVs.
  • Over-Under: Over-under is similar to Side-by-side except that the left and right frames are combined as two horizontal halves of a frame.

How should I send my DCP to theatres?

DCI specifies that the distribution drives should be formatted as EXT2 (with an inode size of 128). While many servers will accept FAT32 formatted rives as well, it is best to follow the specification to ensure compatibility with all server types. Drives can be USB (will result in slower ingestions), DVD (will also be slow) or CRU drives – which will be the fastest. Copy all the files created by QMX, without any changes, to the distribution drive. EXT2 formatted drives may be created using a Linux machine or using EXT2 management applications.
